Tashi Lhunpo, Bylakuppé, Karnataka, India - This morning an estimated 12,000 people, monks, nuns and laypeople gathered in and around the temple at Tashi Lhunpo Monastery re-established in the Tibetan settlement of Bylakuppé, Karnataka, to pray for victims of the recent devastating earthquake in Tibet. The regions of Tibet struck most severely by the earthquake were Shigatsé and Dingri. The principal monastery in Shigatsé is Tashi Lhunpo.

I am deeply saddened to learn of the devastating earthquake that struck Dingri in Tibet and the surrounding regions this morning. It has caused the tragic loss of many lives, numerous injuries, and extensive destruction to homes and property. I offer my prayers for those who have lost their lives and extend my wishes for a swift recovery to all who have been injured.

Tashi Lhunpo, Bylakuppe, Karnataka, India - On Friday 3rd January 2025 His Holiness the Dalai Lama left Dharamsala, where the streets were lined by Tibetans and other well-wishers gathered to see him off, to take a winter sojourn in the warmer climate of South India. He spent the night in New Delhi and yesterday flew on to Bengaluru, where again he rested for the night. This morning, he boarded a helicopter that flew him to Bylakuppe Tibetan Settlement. He landed at the Dickyi Larsoe Football Field.

Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India - On learning that President Jimmy Carter had passed away, His Holiness the Dalai Lama wrote to Chip Carter, the President’s son, at the Carter Center, today, to offer his condolences. “President Carter lived a truly meaningful life, he wrote, with decades of untiring efforts to help the poor and downtrodden, to seek peaceful solutions to conflicts and to advance democracy and human rights throughout the world.”
